A man was shot and killed by police after forcing his way into a Charlotte-area home and stabbing a 13-year-old girl, according to authorities.

At about 7 p.m. Saturday, officers went to a Blairbeth Street in South Charlotte for a call involving domestic violence with a deadly weapon, a Charlotte police news release stated.

When authorities got to the house, they discovered a man with a knife who had forced his way inside, and who was also known to the woman and 13-year-old girl who lived there, police said.

Officers tried to calm the suspect down, but he stabbed the teenager, according to police.

"The officers immediately perceived a lethal threat and one officer fired a service weapon, striking the subject," the release stated.

Police tried to save the suspect until medics arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The wounded teenager was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to authorities.

"No officers with the CMPD were injured in this incident. The names of the officers and subject involved are temporarily being withheld pending appropriate family notification of the incident," the release said.

The officer was put on a paid administrative leave while investigations are being conducted, which is standard practice. The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting.
