CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A student fired a gun outside of West Charlotte High School Monday afternoon during a dispute over a bookbag, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say. 

Officers said they charged the juvenile, "determined to be the sole suspect involved," with possession of a firearm on school grounds.

The shooting happened around 2:15 p.m. The high school is located off Senior Drive, which is near Beatties Ford Road and LaSalle Street. 

Police say two students were arguing over a bookbag, and that's when one student pulled out a gun and fired at least one round. 

"The discharged firearm occurred on campus, but did not occur inside any school building," police said.

One person was treated for a minor injury that wasn't from gunfire, police said. Officers stayed on campus during dismissal Monday.

West Charlotte High School will operate on a remote schedule Tuesday, according to the school's Twitter account. 

Including Monday's incident, 23 guns have been found on different CMS campuses this school year.

Anyone who reports information that leads to an arrest or weapon seizure through Campus Crime Stoppers is eligible for up to $500 in reward money, CMPD says. Students can call 911 or provide anonymous information to a school resource officer or school official. Students can also call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.

Superintendent Earnest Winston recently said CMS would provide all high school students a clear backpack. The backpacks are expected to arrive in February. The district is also increasing safety screenings.

Winston released an urgent video message last week asking for families to help prevent the pattern of guns in schools. 

"Have the tough conversations about guns, other weapons, check their backpacks before they depart for school,” Winston said. “This minor inconvenience that may draw pushback from your adolescent students can help them continue their academic journeys instead of entering the criminal justice system and forever changing the course of their lives in tragic ways."
