A loaded gun was found in a student's backpack Tuesday at South Mecklenburg High School.

A teen was searched by a school resource officer, who found the weapon, according to school officials.

"The weapon was confiscated and authorities were notified. No threats were made and no students were injured," Principal Marc Angerer said in an email.

Angerer also said extra security is on campus and counselors are there for students and staff.

"Please discuss with your students the dangers of bringing weapons on campus and the serious consequences that apply to those who do so against the law and the CMS Code of Student Conduct," he said.

Thomas Hildebrand, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police spokesman, confirmed a gun was found and the student was arrested. He said more details would be released after a preliminary investigation is done.
