GASTON COUNTY, N.C. – Gaston County Sheriff Alan Cloninger says he is retiring after more than 16 years.

He released a statement saying he planned on seeking reelection next year, but has now chosen to leave for family reasons. He calls it one of the hardest decisions of his life.

He also announced he'll be leaving the Democratic Party. He says he will be voting Independent from now on.

"Some of the new Democrats in Washington attack and degrade all law enforcement officers who risk their lives every day to protect the people and in return, are given no respect. This is wrong and unjustified,” the statement reads.

He went on to say he's disappointed to learn that county leaders in the party are "actively recruiting" an opponent for the March 2022 primary.

Cloninger will serve out the remainder of his term until December of 2022 when a new sheriff is sworn in.
