On April 21, Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office deputies shot and killed Andrew Brown Jr. while they attempted to serve drug and arrest warrants. A judge denied the public release of video worn by deputies at the time of the shooting.
Some of Brown’s family members have said they were allowed to see portions of the body camera tapes. Attorneys representing the family said they could only see “snippets” of the recordings in a private viewing.
In May, District Attorney Andrew Womble said there would be no criminal charges filed against the seven deputies who arrived at Brown’s home on the day of his death. All seven of these deputies were put on leave following Brown's death and some have resgined.
Since Brown's killing, the community in Elizabeth City has held nightly marches, calling for transparency.
The announcement on the lawsuit will be made at noon in front of the federal courthouse in Elizabeth City.
