STATESVILLE, N.C. — One child was killed and two were injured in Statesville Monday in two separate shooting incidents. Police say they don't believe the victims were the intended targets.

The first shooting happened just before 7:00 p.m. on Wilson Lee Boulevard, where two children were shot outside a home. A 9-year-old girl died from her injuries and a 7-year-old boy is still being treated, according to Statesville police.

Witnesses said they saw someone in a white car, possibly a Mercedes, shooting a gun while heading south on Wilson Lee Blvd.

While officers were investigating that shooting, another incident involving a child was reported on New Bern Avenue. About 8:30 p.m., police found a 10-year-old boy with a gunshot wound they said was not life-threatening.

Witnesses told police they saw a white car, possibly a Honda Accord, driving away with someone shooting from inside the car.

All three of the victims were Black. Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact the department immediately.

"If you saw the murder of this innocent child and injuries to the other innocent children, you must help in solving these cases. If you have evidence or information regarding the shooters, please contact us," police said in a news release.
