GASTON COUNTY, N.C. –  Charges are pending after a multiple car collision in Gaston County Saturday night resulted in the death of a six year old, authoritires said.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, an Audi and a Dodge Challenger were traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed on U.S. 74 about 9:30 p.m. when they collided near Sparrow Springs Road, causing the Audi to lose control and cross the median, striking another car.

Inside that car was a father and a six-year-old child. Both were taken to the hospital, where the six year old later died.

The father was treated and released, officials said.

The driver of the Audi is also in the hospital in critical condition, and has been identified as a 46-year-old from Kings Mountain.

The driver of the Dodge Challenger returned to the scene, and has been identified as a 20-year-old woman from the Bessemer City area, police said.

The child has not been identified.

It is unclear who, or how many people, could be facing charges in the crash.
