CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man will face multiple charges after shooting at and being shot by police during a chase Thursday afternoon.
Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department say warrants will be served on Shelton Smith, 33, once he is released from the hospital. He faces charges of two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault on law enforcement with a firearm, possession of a firearm by felon and will also be charged for an unrelated outstanding warrant for communicating threats, police said.
Officers reportedly tried to approach Smith around noon Thursday in connection to a reported shooting and armed robbery. Police said Smith took off on foot, however, and fired a weapon at officers during the chase.
A pursuing officer, CMPD Officer Trey Hinton, returned fire, striking Smith. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. No officers were injured.
Detectives said a gun was recovered at the scene.
Hinton, according to CMPD, has been with the department since September of 2018. He has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure anytime an officer fires their weapon.
The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate the shooting, and the Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate, but parallel investigation, into whether CMPD’s policies and procedures were followed during the incident.
On Friday, CMPD announced probable cause has also been obtained to charge Smith with a robbery that took place on May 25 at the Royal Inn. This is the crime that police say prompted them to make contact with Smith Thursday prior to the shooting.
Upon his release from the hospital, Smith will also be served warrants for robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by felon in connection to this case.
