GREENSBORO, N.C. — The City of Greensboro has announced they are beginning construction on the final mile of the downtown greenway in the fall of 2021. Greenways have become very popular across the nation and significant to the cities they belong to.
According to Brian Crean, head of the Downtown Greenway Run and Walk Group, the newly constructed greenway in downtown Greensboro is the perfect place to get fit.
“I think a lot of greenways tend to be point-to-point, so they’re longer and straighter and maybe go a further distance. I think the downtown greenway is unique because it’s a specific loop, four miles, that then connects to other greenways that go further out of town,” said Brian Crean.
Currently, only three miles of the urban greenway are done. The final mile will be worked on in the fall of 2021. The greenway was constructed for economic development and recreational uses. It also connects different neighborhoods throughout downtown. Crean uses it as a way to see more of the city he loves.
“I’ve definitely enjoyed running the downtown greenway to learn about the different neighborhoods and become more aware of my whole city and not just the small part of town that I am from,” said Crean.
Crean hosts a weekly run and walk group that meets every Thursday on the greenway. They meet at the Lofi Park sign and take a 40-minute walk and run around the greenway.
“My running group is a really important part of my life, and I mean a lot of the guys and the men and women I meet there have become really close friends, and we’ve been running together ten years or more, so it’s definitely a great community,” said Crean.
The entire greenway project cost $43 million and is expected to be completed in 2023.
