CHARLOTTE, N.C. — For the past year-and-a-half Jasmine and her family have lived inside a motel room at the Southern Comfort Inn on Tuckaseegee Rd. in West Charlotte.
She lives at the inn with her two young children and niece.
The extended stay motel not only provides housing but also works with organizations to provide meals to guests.
“Food, clothes, pretty much everything I got came from up here,” Jasmine said. She didn't want to provide her last name.
However, the Southern Comfort Inn is scheduled to close next week.
General Manager Traci Canterbury says the bills have been racking up. She said while half of guests regularly pay rent, the others don't.
She said because of the eviction moratorium, she can't kick people out who don't pay.
“It's just disheartening, especially when you know people have a way to pay, they've just chosen not to pay,” added Canterbury, who also lives at the motel.
Canterbury says they've run out of money and can't pay the utilities. Unless something changes, she said they will be forced to shut down.
Jasmine said she pays her rent every month and is worried what will happen with her family next week.
“We need some help, we need help,” Jasmine added. “I don't know where me and my children will be at."
