CHARLOTTE, N.C. — N.C. A&T’s first female drum major is still dancing years after her first debut at Aggie Stadium.

What You Need To Know

  • Dr. Kellye Hall is an emergency physician and also owns a dance studio

  • She was N.C. A&T's first female drum major

  • Each year she comes back to her old stomping grounds to march with the band

Dr. Kellye Hall is an emergency physician and owner of NC Dance District. She takes pride in being a full-time doctor but a part-time dancer.

She was the first female drum major at N.C. A&T. She grew up the eldest of three siblings and a second-generation Aggie.

“My dad was actually in the band. He played saxophone," Hall said. "My uncle was in the band, so I always wanted to be in the band."

She got inspiration from family and the legendary Anthony Criss, a former drum major at N.C. A&T. Each year she revisits Aggie Stadium to march with the band and offer advice to young women hoping to become drum majors one day.

"You have to be better than the guys," Hall said. "We have to do three times as much as what they do. We have to look exactly like them but a tad bit better."

Hall is on track to becoming a bestselling author. She plans to release a memoir this summer about her journey from a doctor to a dancer. The book is titled "I am the beat, God sets the pace."
