CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Animal Care and Control is joining Maddie’s Fund in a nationwide effort to get more lost pets back to their owners with the No Place Like Home Challenge.
According to Humane Society, in 2019 only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats without tags or a microchip taken to a shelter were reunited with their owners. Part of the No Place Like Home Challenge is opening more microchip scanning stations.
CMPD Animal Care and Control has partnered with veterinarians, dog parks, and pet shops to open around a dozen microchip scanning points across Charlotte. Chloe Hankinson, a CMPD animal control officer, says having a couple of 24-hour microchip scanning points will help get pets back to their homes.
“If the community that it runs into is not familiar with the dog they can take it to any of these places that we’re partnering with and they’ll have a microchip scanner that they can scan it and hopefully get it back to the owner”, Hankinson says.
CMPD Animal Care and Control is giving away free identification tags in March to also help get pets in Charlotte-Mecklenburg properly identified in case they get lost.
