CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Organizers called the first day of the Bank of America Stadium mass vaccination event a smashing success.
People were moving in and out of the stadium and surrounding areas easily on Friday. Organizers say the total time from check-in to exiting the stadium was averaging about 25 minutes.
Patients leaving the area described it as a happy day.
"People are in a very good mood. I mean, the process is so organized and so simple. That, you know, they walk you through the parking, the whole thing. It’s thought out so good, there’s no problem here at all,” Joe Johnson says.
Johnson, an over 65-year-old veteran, says the shot was not painful and so quick, he did not even notice.
Johnson was one of 2,400 people given the first dose of the Moderna vaccine at the stadium.
He, and the others, already have appointments to receive the second dose in four weeks at the stadium.
The mass vaccination event was the second in as many weeks, thanks to a public-private partnership between Atrium Health, Honeywell, Tepper Sports and Entertainment, and Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Honeywell’s Chief Supply Chain Officer Torsten Pilz called it an emotional day.
"We had very cheerful volunteers who were happy and laughing, and I saw many people leaving this area with tears in their eyes. They felt it was...they had hope. It was a good day. It was a very positive day,” Pilz said on a conference call after the event.
He and other organizers said Friday was a test run for Saturday and Sunday, when they plan to vaccinate 8,500 each day.
Vaccine recipient Mary Smith said if it goes as smoothly as Friday did, there will not be a problem.
“It was well put together. There was just plenty of room for plenty of people to get in there and in fact, we were both surprised that there were no more people here than there are. But it went well!” Smith said as she left.
Her husband had received his vaccine a week ago at the mass vaccination event at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
The speedway facilitated the vaccination of 16,000 people and is set to offer them a second shot of the Pfizer vaccine in three weeks.
Atrium Health wanted to remind the public they do have to have an appointment to come down to Bank of America Stadium over the next few days and appointments are already full.
However, Atrium Health and its partners plan on hosting more mass vaccination events in the coming weeks, depending on vaccine supply.
Overall, they plan on vaccinating one million people by July 4.
