CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. – August means back to school for students across the country, but some cafeteria workers never left. School Nutrition Manger in Chatham County, Jessica Frye, says working during a pandemic has only slightly changed their work style. They always wear protective equipment, but now they wear face masks and take temperatures.

What You Need To Know

  • Cafeteria workers in Chatham County are still at work to make sure kids don’t go hungry

  • Lunches are still being delivered during remote learning

  • Over the summer, 25,000 kids needed lunches to be delivered

Chefs like Sarah Kirby, who have been working for more than 20 years say they don't mind the extra precautions, as long as students are still fed.

"It gives me joy. They enjoy what they get, they enjoy the food they eat a lot of times. They might not have nothing else at home. I enjoy it" Kirby said.

Chefs at Chatham Elementary have been making about 300 meals a week. Then, they deliver them to kids homes, or have parents or kids come pick them up.
