CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A lot of people have lost their job since COVID-19, but not all parts of Mecklenburg County have been impacted the same.
Charlotte Works put together a map that shows the projected percent of workers who collected unemployment for the month of June.
The numbers break down by zip code and range from under 9 percent to nearly 34 percent.
Many of the high numbers are in the crescent area of the county, which is predominately made up of people of color.
“When looking at the map, it's really a continuation of the work that's been going on in Charlotte related to economic mobility in the crescent and the wedge, and seeing those areas that have been highly segregated we see high disproportionally in unemployment,” Charlotte Works Director of Labor Market Intelligence Kevin Loux says.
Charlotte Works says the industries most affected are hospitality, professional services, and healthcare.
It offers virtual resume reviews, job fairs, and training scholarships for people who were working in struggling industries.
