CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- For the first time in 15 years, UNC Charlotte has a new leader.
Dr. Sharon Gaber is the school's first female chancellor. Gaber is the former president of the University of Toledo in Ohio and has a background in urban planning.
Gaber started on the job around a month ago, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The school falls under the UNC system, which has all schools reopening this fall. UNC Charlotte is starting later this year, and will offer half of its classes in-person and half online.
The school is giving out a bag to students and staff that has things like masks and a thermometer inside.
The university has prepared for positive cases on campus, but Gaber says they'll have to be flexible.
"If we go beyond what is the normal, and it becomes something that is a danger to the health and safety of our community, then we could easily pivot to going fully online, even for a two- or three-week period," Gaber says.
UNC Charlotte is offering COVID-19 testing and will be testing the wastewater in residence halls to detect the virus.
