FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Around 5:30 p.m. Friday, rescue crews called off the search for two cars that reportedly crashed off of a bridge and into the Cape Fear River on I-95 South Thursday night.
According to the State Highway Patrol, around 7 p.m. Thursday authorities responded to a report of a collision on I-95 near the 46-mile marker.
A witness said he saw one to two vehicles involved in a collision, and the vehicles possibly traveled over the Cape Fear River bridge and into the river.
Crews searched the area until midnight Thursday, and resumed the search at 9 a.m. Friday. The only thing found by the end of the search, officials say, was a part off of a black Toyota.
Vander Fire Department Chief Richard Bradshaw says the search has been completed and there are currenty no plans to resume unless additional information becomes available. Bradshaw says he feels the search that was conducted was efficient.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is still asking that anyone who finds a loved one is missing or failed to arrive at their destination to please contact your local authorities.
