FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – A petition to tear down the Market House in Fayetteville has received over 100,000 signatures.

The building was constructed in the 1830s, and one of its original purposes was to sell African American slaves.

The petition states, “The market house building is a reminder of slavery and fuels white supremacy. It should be replaced with a beautiful landmark funded by an annual city or state grant and remain a historic site.”

The petition has a goal of 150,000 signatures.

In response, a second petition has also been created to save the historic building. That petition has a goal of 1 million signatures.
