They were among the more than 1,000 people marching downtown carrying “Black Lives Matter” signs and chanting.

One teacher said they must lead by example, and show their students how to make their voices heard if they want to create change. 

“It’s important for teachers to be out here today because we all teach black and brown students," Jacynthia Gray says. "If you’re silent during this time. Silence means compliance.”

Winston-Salem police were also at Saturday's protest, which remained peaceful.
