NORTH CAROLINA -- So far, the coronavirus pandemic hasn't caused organizers of the 2020 RNC to consider postponing the convention.

On Thursday, the Democratic National Convention was postponed until August 17, one week before the Republican National Convention.

If the RNC goes as planned, it and the DNC could be some of the first major gatherings with national interest during the pandemic recovery.

Marc Lotter, the director of strategic communications for Trump 2020, said it will likely cast North Carolina as the backdrop of the recovery or lack thereof.

"Charlotte will absolutely, regardless of what's going on currently, will be a showcase of everything that's going on in our country," said Lotter.

About 50,000 visitors, including 15,000 national and international journalists, are expected in Charlotte during the convention.

The RNC is scheduled for August 24-27.

A spokesperson with the 2020 RNC said in a statement:

"We remain committed to planning a safe and successful 2020 Republican National Convention and are steadfast in our mission to re-nominate President Donald J. Trump. As we have done throughout our planning, we will remain in communication with all stakeholders and ensure the convention prioritizes the health and safety of all attendees. We have fantastic partners in Charlotte and beyond helping to ensure that this convention is a five-start even and the economic boost local businesses need."
