MARSHVILLE, N.C. (AP) — The mother of a newborn baby found alive inside of a plastic bag has been charged with attempted murder, the Union County Sheriff’s Office said.

Casey Marie Thomas, 24, is additionally charged with felony child abuse. Officials say she is believed to have placed the infant in a bag ouside under some leaves shortly after giving birth on Wednesday. 

Around 2 p.m., the Union County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home near Marshville after receiving a call from a hospital that a baby may be near the location, the agency said in a statement.

Investigators heard faint crying sounds and found the baby boy inside of a bag that was covered in leaves and hidden near a fence, officials said. The child appeared to have been recently born, according to the statement. The infant was taken to a hospital for care and is said to be in good condition.

He is now in DSS custody, officials say.

Marshville is about 35 miles (56.33 kilometers) southeast of Charlotte.
