RALEIGH, N.C. — Saturday night, a 42-year-old with no NHL experience was practically plucked from the streets and tossed onto the ice for the Carolina Hurricanes.
David Ayres became the oldest player in NHL history to win his goalie debut against the Toronto Maple Leafs, after both goalies for the 'Canes had to leave the game because of injuries.
The Hurricanes Organization says by Sunday morning, 2,500 David Ayres t-shirts were sold online.
"I had a couple of text messages that told me get in there and I hadn't seen the footage, I was in the media room kinda by myself and the guy comes in and get going, get ready, walked down the tunnel and it was wild, it was pretty fun," said Ayres.
Ayres will be at the Hurricanes game Tuesday night as the official "siren sounder."
Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin has declared Tuesday "David Ayres Day" in Raleigh.
