PINEVILLE, N.C. — Pineville Police Department says the man shot by two officers Saturday morning is now facing multiple charges.
- Man was allegedly waving a handgun at traffic while walking down the road
- Police say they perceived an iminent threat when they tried to approach him and fired their weapons
- Man was injured and transported to a nearby hospital
After being released from the hospital, police say Timothy Rochell Caraway, 23, was served with seven warrants related to the February 1 officer-involved shooting and four additional warrants related to incidents that occurred in another jurisdiction in 2019.
Just after 10 a.m., officers say they responded to a call about a man waving a handgun at ongoing traffic while walking along North Polk Street. When officers approached the man, later identified as Caraway, police say he "turned towards the officers and displayed actions on what the officers believed to be an imminent threat to their safety and the safety of others."
Two officers fired at the suspect, hitting him. Medic says Caraway was was transported to CMC with life threatening injuries.
Police say a handgun was recovered at the scene. No officers or other bystanders were injured.
The names of the two officers are not being released at this time, but officials say they have been placed on administrative leave as part of their standard procedure for any officer-involved shooting.
The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate.
For the Saturday, February 1 incident, police say Caraway is charged with four felony counts of assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer (pointing), and one misdemeanor count each of going armed to the terror of the public, carrying a concealed weapon, and resist, obstruct, and delay law enforcement officers.
