The Durham Police Department says that Hatchell hit the woman, Betty Colby, in the parking lot of a fitness center off of Farrington Road at noon Monday.
Investigators say Hatchell was traveling eastbound through the parking lot and made a slow left turn in front of the business and collided with Colby, who was knocked backward and hit her head on the pavement. Neither speed nor impairment were factors in the crash, according to investigators. Colby died on Wednesday.
Hatchell, 67, was cited with Misdemeanor Death by Vehicle Friday.
Hatchell resigned this past April 18 after leading the Tar Heels for 33 seasons. Three of her teams reached the Final Four and the 1994 team won the NCAA title. She was 751-325 at UNC.
