CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte couple is thankful they are alive after a pickup truck rammed into the front of their home on Freedom Drive Friday night.
- Truck crashed into the dining room of a Freedom Drive home
- Carl Gadd and his disabled girlfriend were in a back room when the accident occurred
- Driver was transported with serious injuries
Carl Gadd says he has been scared something like this would happen since the city widened a section of Freedom Drive about four years ago in front of his home.
The pickup truck reportedly lost control on the road, went down an embankment, slid towards the front of the house, and crashed through the dining room.
Gadd says he and his disabled girlfriend were spending time in a back room of the house when they heard the crash, which he initially thought was a tree falling from the rain.
When he walked outside however, Gadd says he found a man unresponsive in the pickup truck that was partially inside his dining room.
Gadd says he’s been asking the city for years to install a guard rail to protect not only his home, but also drivers from this type of accident. He tells Spectrum News this isn’t even the first time a car has lost control in this spot. Gadd says about a year ago, another car came around the curve, through his lawn, but stopped just before hitting his home.
“Before they widened the road there was a big ravine here with a wide creek and big oak trees that would keep that vehicle from getting to my house. But now it’s a straight shot to my bedroom,” said Gadd.
The driver of the pickup truck was transported to Atrium CMC with serious injuries.
As for gadd and his girlfriend, he says they will be staying in the house, but he hopes the city will do something soon to prevent this from happening again.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
