GREENSBORO, N.C. — Hannah Nguyen spends just as much time in school as she does in the community.

  • Hannah Nguyen is a standout in school, sports, and her community
  • Nguyen credits her parents with instilling a hard work ethic in her
  • Nguyen received the Scholar Athlete Award and recognition of community service from Senator Michael Garrett

The senior at Western Guilford is a standout on the Hornets volleyball team. Last season she helped guide the team to a 26-1 record and a Piedmont Triad 3A conference title.

Head coach Diane Long credits Nguyen for the team's success. "She helped set the tone last year and the same this year, and that's one of the things that's notable about Hannah," Long said.

But the accolades extend far beyond the court.

Nguyen carries a 4.5 weighted GPA in the classroom and has 200 community service hours under her belt, including spending time in the Domican Republic last summer.

Nguyen credits her parents with instilling that hard work ethic in her.

"My parents, they sacrificed a lot for me and I always try to repay them back and do my best in school," Nguyen said.

The joy of putting a smile on others faces is what Nguyen strives for, and she thanks her mother and father for teaching her the importance of giving back. That's why the star in the classroom, volleyball court, and community works so hard — to please her parents who gave her so much.

Senator Michael Garrett awarded Nguyen with the Scholar Athlete Award and acknowledged her community service.

The senior hopes to enroll at N.C. State and become an aerospace engineer.
