BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — The Burke County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a possible jury duty scam making its way around the county.

  • Scammer advises resident they have missed jury duty
  • Tells resident they must purchase pre-paid debit card to pay
  • Sheriff says they will never direct residents to send money in this manner for missing jury duty

Officials say the scammer calls and identifies themselves as Lt. Westbroook. The resident is then told they have missed jury duty and must purchase a VISA debit card, provide the scammer with the card number, and mail it to 175 Government Drive in Morganton.

Deputies say this is NOT a legitimate address.

The scammer then tells the resident they are to meet with Judge Erwin once this is complete.

The BCSO says this is a scam and residents should not send any money in this situation. They say residents will never be directed to send money in this manner for missing jury duty.

Anyone who believes they are or may become a victim of this scam can call the Burke County Sheriff's Office at 828-438-5500.
