The quarterback has been put on injured reserve due to his ongoing foot injury which will cause him to miss the remainder of the regular season. He could return for the postseason.
General manager Marty Hurney Marty Hurney released a statement saying that Newton saw to foot specialists last week and both said that it would take “significant time for the injury to fully heal."
“We have said all along that it is impossible to put a timetable on his injury. Nobody is more frustrated with that fact than Cam. He’s one of the fiercest competitors I’ve been around during my 20-plus years in the league. At this time, we have decided that the best decision to reach the goal of bringing the foot back to 100 percent is to place Cam on injured reserve,” Hurley said.
This means Kyle Allen will be the starter from here on out.
The big question now turns to Cam's future. He has one year left on his contract. If the Panthers cut or trade him during the offseason, they will save more than $19 million towards the salary cap.
