CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- There’s one thing that travelers prepare for when coming in and out of the Charlotte Douglas International Airport — traffic.

Chief operating officer Jack Christine says that while the new plan isn't a quick fix for travelers before the holidays, he hopes that the timelines of the changes will make for a better traveling experience for everyone.

ZONES FOR RIDESHARING

The airport was built well before ride sharing existed, so creating lanes designated for this type of service wasn’t thought of until now. Beginning Friday, travelers using a ride app service like Uber or Lyft, will be picked up on the upper level temporarily.

Christine says he is really optimistic about creating a zone for ride sharing. Until Zone 4 is made, ride share drivers will be directed to the top level of the airport instead of the lower level where they’re currently found.

Some travelers say designating lanes for ride share is helpful, but don’t see the change being very beneficial.

"Personally, I don’t think it’s going to help because it starts at the beginning of the traffic. The front of the traffic where you are first coming in. So, they don’t really have any control over so thats where it’s hard for everybody to merge,” traveler Markie Johnson said.

The zone is expected to be completed by October 31. Even once zone 4 is up and running, a solution in finding a consistent flow is ongoing.

NEW SIGNAGE

Changes of the land operation at the airport are also being made to help people know where they’re supposed to be like proper signage. Officials say maybe that will help to relieve some of the congestion and traffic built up.

“The columns are wrapped in a specific color. Large numbers so people can see clearly what zone they’re moving into. And from a wait timing perspective we think that’s going to have a big impact,” Christine said.

OTHER OPTIONS

He also says the airport is looking at other options like using part of an hourly deck with access from the tunnels when the lobby expansion is completed.

"We’re exploring different things because we know thats a huge part of our land side operation and we need to do what we can to provide a good customer experience for our customers using that application,” he said.
