Monday will feature a day in between two systems: what's left of Nestor to our northeast and a cold front approaching from the west. Look for a quieter day of mostly cloudy skies with a few showers possible in the mountains and foothills. Highs will top off in the mid 70s.
Rain chances will ramp up into late Monday night and Tuesday morning as a cold front begins moving into western North Carolina.
Tuesday's morning commute will feature scattered showers and embedded thunderstorms. Some storms may even become severe by mid-morning, especially east of I-77 where a level 2 severe risk exists for Union, Anson, Richmond, and Stanly counties. The main threat will be damaging winds but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. By 2pm in the afternoon, the cold front should be to the east of our viewing area. Rainfall totals iwll be heaviest in the mountains, where amounts of up to 1.5" will be possible. Lesser amounts are expected across the Piedmont, where totals should generally be up to a quarter of an inch.
