UNION COUNTY, N.C. -- Deputies along with friends and family are mourning the loss of a teen investigators say was killed by her own father.

  • Authorities say Zaria Burgess was murdered by her father, Joshua Burgess
  • He turned himself in Sunday morning
  • Veteran deputies say this is possibly the most disturbing case they ever investigated

Union County authorities say 32-year-old Joshua Burgess admitted to murdering his 15-year-old daughter, Zaria Burgess, on Sunday morning when he turned himself in. But it's not just friends and family members still searching for answers. Even veteran deputies say this is possibly the most disturbing case they ever investigated.

“Because I’m a new grandfather, and I have a different perspective now and maybe my emotions are vulnerable but this one...I don’t want anything more like this,” said Capt. Cody Luke of the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

Union County school leaders say Zaria Burgess was a student at Monroe High School. Counselors will be available for students once school starts next week.
