RALEIGH, N.C. -- Governor Roy Cooper has vetoed a hotly depated immigration enforcement bill in our state.
The bill would require sheriffs across the state to comply with federal immigration detainers or else risk being removed from office.
Right now, Sheriffs can decide independently if they will comply with these requests to hold people in county jails until they can be handled by immigration agents.
The bill passed the general assembly Tuesday.
Those advocating for the law say it is an issue of public safety, while others call it unconstitutional.
