Chief Andy Stephenson says the award is based on innovation, collaboration, community engagement, and impact on policing.

The department made changes, including new police cruisers, locks inside classrooms, to help in case of a shooting, and a new cadet program.

Stephenson says the cadet program is only the second one in the nation.

Students are able to attend school, while becoming certified as a police officer, and working with the department.

They're then able to have cadets inside of classrooms and dorms, in case of emergencies.

The chief says more changes are coming to the university, as they work to find new ways to keep students and those in the surrounding area safe.
