CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- In a year from now for the Republican National Convention, the roads near the Spectrum Center will be filled with people, media trucks will be everywhere, and hotel rooms will be booked.

  • The RNC released the logo at the Spectrum Center as it kicked off its summer meeting
  • The meeting comes just weeks after Charlotte's city council passed a resolution to condemn what they called President Donald Trump's racist tweets and comments
  • Officials say they'll need about 8,000 ambassadors to welcome the roughly 50,000 people who will stay in around 13,000 hotel rooms

It's why getting ready for an event like this requires preparations more than a year out. Charlotte is front and center in the RNC's 2020 logo. Featured is the Queen City's crown merged with the GOP's iconic elephant.

"We love Charlotte," RNC 2020 President Marcia Lee Kelly said. “It is an elephant that is serious. It is an elephant that has a lot of dignity. It is an elephant that is forward moving.”

The RNC released the logo at the Spectrum Center as it kicked off its summer meeting.

Organizers will start the convention's planning process.

“This is the official kickoff of our volunteer recruitment for the convention. We will need as we call them, rock star ambassadors,” John Lassiter, the Charlotte 2020 host committee chair, said.

He says they'll need about 8,000 of those ambassadors to welcome the roughly 50,000 people who will stay in around 13,000 hotel rooms.

“This really is going to be an opportunity to shine a light on a really great city that is growing at a rapid pace,” RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said.

The meeting comes just weeks after Charlotte's city council passed a resolution to condemn what they called President Donald Trump's racist tweets and comments.

Ron Kaufman led the site selection committee for the event to come and says he isn't worried.

“This isn't about the president or the challenger. This is about a process that makes America great, legitimately. Since the day Lincoln had his first convention in Chicago have been about that...it's about the process,” he said.

The planning process is already in motion as Charlotte prepares for an event that will bring thousands of people with a range of emotions on who finishes at the top of that process. The meeting will continue Thursday in uptown Charlotte.

The convention will occur from August 24 to 27, 2020. More information regarding volunteering and vendor sign up, can be found on the convention's website.
