NORTH CAROLINA -- New charges have been filed in the case of absentee ballot fraud in North Carolina's 9th district.

RELATED:

A grand jury indicted Leslie McCrae Dowless and other individuals for obstruction of justice, perjury and conspiracy, amongst other charges.

Others charged include Lisa M. Britt, Ginger S. Eason, Woody D. Hester, James Singletary, Jessica Dowless, and Kelly Hendrix.

This is the second set of indictments against Dowless from an investigation into absentee ballot fraud in Bladen County.

Dowless was first indicted in February on charges related to the election fraud investigation, including three counts related to obstruction of justice and ballot fraud in the 2018 election and four courts of those same charges in the 2016 election.

Dowless was the political operative Mark Harris hired during the election last fall in an effort to get out the vote.

As a result of a probe by the State Elections Board, it was determined a new election will be held.

Democrat Dan McCready will face Republican state Sen. Dan Bishop in a September special election.

The investigation is ongoing.

An earlier version of this story listed Tonya B. Long as one who received additional charges. These charges have since been dropped.
