TEGA CAY, S.C. -- A controversial monument outside the Tega Cay Police Department will return.

  • Some people in the community say it's a compromise by leaving out the Bible verse
  • The city manager says the officers are happy
  • The city says the monument is being fixed

The monument was put up earlier this month, but it got pushback from people upset the word "lord" was written three times on the stone. In response, the city removed the words but that caused more anger, this time from a different group.

So, the city took the monument down to regroup. The Tega Cay city council's unanimous solution, announced Friday, is to bring the monument back to the same place.

The stone will be almost the same, but the bible verse on the front of the stone will be left out.

"We screwed up," Tega Cay city manager Charlie Funderburk said. "Our police department is who the monument was for, they're excited. What we are asking folks now is to stand united with us and continue to support our law enforcement officers and be happy."

The city says the monument is being fixed in storage and will be put back in front of the police station as soon as possible.
