CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- After President Trump held a rally in Greenville, some residents are turning to city leaders condemning the Queen City's involvement in the 2020 Republican National Convention.

Some city council members say many Charlotte residents have voiced their concern over racist remarks from the president. While some Democratic council members are calling for something to be done, council members on the other side of the aisle say this isn't anything new.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles tweeted today, condemning the president's remarks.

“I think we need to remember that the convention is not a campaign rally for the president that the city is sponsoring, this is an important part of our democracy and Charlotte will become one of only a few cities to have hosted both conventions, so there’s a lot of advantage in that,” said Republican Councilman Ed Driggs.

City council has a work session coming up this Monday. At this time, members say they do not have anything about this on the agenda.

The Republican National Convention comes to Charlotte August 24-27, 2020.
