HIGH POINT, N.C.--The Salvation Army in High Point is opening its lobby up as a cooling center during the extreme heat.

  • The organization is providing water and a cooling center for those in need.
  • Community bottled water donations are highly appreciated.
  • When the shelter is closed water will still be given out.

The Salvation Army in High Point is asking for the community's help with bottled water donations, for the guest to be able to relax in the cold room and be hydrated.

"With the rising temperatures that we have, homeless people are out in these elements. We did a little research and looked at what dehydration can cause for folks. And we thought - let's open up and allow these folks to come in and at least get hydrated and find a little cool place to sit for a little while," said Major Gary Sturdivant.

The cooling station is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

While the office is closed Thursday and Friday, shelter staff will be available to give out water.
