CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Based on preliminary investigations, officials say the explosion that seriously injured one person and killed another was likely caused by an accidental interior natural gas leak.

Investigators did not say where the leak started: stove, water heater, or any other gas appliance.
Matthew Westover, a spokesperson for the Charlotte Fire Department, says the blast sent debris and rubble several hundred feet away into several other properties. He says the estimated damage is valued at about $5 million. They are still looking into point of orgin and investigating other details. The surviving victim was found toward the back of the home near a stairwell.
Westover says there were reports of an odor that smelled like gas. Since it was an interior gas leak, it was not a Piedmont Natural Gas line.
As the investigation continues, investigators are testing items at a lab. They say they are confident in their findings so far.
He advises homeowners to have their gas-powered appliances properly installed and professionally maintained. If you smell gas, he says it’s important to call 911 immediately.
