It’s money gained after two million voters across North Carolina were asked to chose top teachers they consider heroes.

Veteran teacher Jeff Walker started an engineering program at Pine Lake Preparatory that became so popular, the school had to build more classroom space to fit all the students interested.

This week the NC Education Lottery gave Walker a check for $10,000 dollars for being an “education hero.”

“I’m almost in total shock as I read the email and I just couldn’t believe it happened,” Walker says. “I was overwhelmed to be selected out of all of the wonderful candidates that were nominated.”

Walker also runs an open mic program to give students a chance to express themselves.

Walker says he’s taught about 3,000 students over the years. Walker’s school is also awarded $10,000 dollars.
