CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. -- Catawba County sheriff's deputies are investigating after they found a man dead in his home Wednesday morning.

  • The victim's family says Emden Syres lived by himself
  • Deputies say there were signs of trauma
  • Investigators are looking for 32-year-old Justin Dalton

The sheriff's office first got a call Wednesday morning from a co-worker and friend who was concerned the man hadn't been to work in two days. When deputies got to his home on Sigmon Dairy Road, they found him dead, face down in a room with signs of trauma.

The family is from West Virginia, but say they drove down as soon as they heard about what happened. The mother told us her son's name is Emden Syres. He was 47 years old and lived by himself, but others did stay with him from time to time.

“There are no signs of forced entry. The back door was ajar,” Chief Deputy Brian Kelly said.

Detectives are looking for 32-year-old Justin Dalton, who they say is a person of interest. They are also looking for the victim's car which is missing. It’s a 2016 black Honda Accord license plate number DMR8076.
