CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The University of North Carolina at Charlotte has approved Degrees in Memoriam for Riley Howell and Reed Parlier.
- UNCC has awarded Riley Howell and Reed Parlier Degrees in Memoriam.
- The two young men were killed in a shooting on the last day of class.
- Howell is being hailed a hero for trying to stop the gunman.
The pair died Tuesday when a gunman entered Kennedy Hall and began shooting into a classroom.

Howell, from Waynesville, was a 21-year-old environmental studies major. He is being hailed nationally as a hero for his efforts to stop the gunman.
Parlier, from Midland, was a 19-year-old who intended to pursue a computer science major.

A statement released by Chancellor Dubois calls for unity, saying, “I would ask that you join me in turning our hearts and minds to the families of the two members of our community who lost their lives. Some of us knew these young men as our students, our classmates, our friends, our family, our sons. For all of us, they were fellow members of Niner Nation, and we will learn and forever remember their names and their legacy.”
