CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Lynn Marilla’s official title is Chief Camper and S’mores Maker. She is the founder of Eagle Rock Camp.

She started the camp in 2010 after getting bored in retirement. The camp offers week-long retreats to military families around the country.

The camp provides therapeutic recreation and workshops focused on everything from relationship building to financial literacy.

“You're surrounded by other military families who have faced similar circumstances,” said Tommy Watson.

Tommy and Jackie Watson went to the camp around five years ago. Tommy is a military chaplain.

“Lynn has discovered a secret niche to connecting to military families in a way the government has not been able to,” Tommy said.

Marilla didn't work with military members before retirement but she's definitely made a connection. 130 families have gone through the camp which is free. Marilla said they've not only restored marriages, they've saved lives. She says they've averted eight suicides.

“My eyes leak a lot. It's given me a bigger heart than ever for these military families,” Marilla said. “They are some of the most precious people I've ever met.”

“I think God put a special warmth in her heart for veterans,” Watson said.
