CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Hawthorne Lane bridge in Charlotte was torn down to make way for a new bridge that can accommodate the new Gold Line.

  • The bridge was supposed to be done in March but the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) tells Spectrum News that work on the bridge has stopped.
  • CATS uncovered a problem with the girders and it said they don't fit the specifications for alignment on the bridge.
  • CATS said it's working with the contractor to resolve the issue and develop a solution.

The bridge was supposed to be done in March but the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) tells Spectrum News that work on the bridge has stopped.

CATS uncovered a problem with the girders and it said they don't fit the specifications for alignment on the bridge. It’s an issue it said falls to the contractor.

It's another blow for businesses which have already suffered.

“It definitely has a negative impact,” said Forde Britt.

Britt recently opened Toucan Louis Grab n' Go near the bridge.

It's a market that's aimed for neighbors looking to grab something within walking distance. He knew the construction could cause an issue but it's been more he they expected.

“It's just something you have to deal with. It's not something you can overcome on your own. So we have to work a little bit harder,” Britt said.

Britt said they are in for the long game with the hope the Gold Line will be worth the wait.

But CATS admits its doesn't how the long the bridge delay will be.

CATS said it's working with the contractor to resolve the issue and develop a solution. At this time it said there are no additional costs to the project. CATS also said the girders installed are safe to drive under.
