CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers have arrested a man accused of sexually assaulting a woman Uber driver last week.

  • Jonathan Neal, 31, is accused of sexual assault
  • Incident happened June 30 on North Graham Street
  • He faces several charges including second-degree sexual assault

Police have identified that suspect as Jonathan Neal. On June 30 at around 1:30 a.m., officers say he used the app and was picked up from a business on Albemarle Road. They say as the 31-year-old victim was taking him to his destination, he sexually assaulted her.

Neal then told the victim to pull over at a location on North Graham Street where he raped the victim.

Uber has also released a statement regarding the incident saying:

“Our thoughts are with our driver-partner during this difficult time. What was reported is disturbing beyond measure. We’re grateful the suspect is in custody and thank the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for their work on this case.”

Neal faces a list of charges including second-degree sexual assault and an Uber spokesperson says he no longer has access to the app. The spokesperson also says an emergency button was just launched for riders and one will also be available for drivers soon.
