Colleges and universities across North Carolina consistently rank amongst the best in the nation. But North Carolina's four-year institutions are seeing similar enrollment issues that others are seeing across the country. 

There have been a million fewer students enrolled in college in the past two years, according to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center.

While universities are working to reduce that number, there are many factors working against them - from a strong labor market to the concern over student loan debt.
