ST. LOUIS — A north St. Louis hospital has permanently closed.

State health officials confirm the Homer G. Phillips Memorial Hospital near Jefferson and Cass surrendered its license on Monday. It had been closed temporarily since December due to complaints over the hospital's ability to maintain an emergency blood supply.

The hospital submitted a plan to correct problems, but state regulators said the answers were incomplete.

State officials also said they didn't know until last month that the hospital planned to lay off about 80 staffers at the end of February.

In December, Spectrum News reported a majority of employees at Homer G. Phillips hospital were furloughed, according to a statement by a hospital spokesperson.

The hospital, which shares its name with a now shuttered hospital in a different section of north St. Louis, is part of developer Paul McKee’s NorthSide Regeneration project. Funded in part with nearly $400 million in tax increment financing, NorthSide seeks to transform a blighted area north of downtown with new housing, commercial projects and job-creating industry.
