Mainers will now need permits in order to have bonfires.
Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry on Oct. 25 will implement a new law mandating burn permits for campfires larger than three feet in height and three feet in diameter that are not for debris disposal.
The new law makes it illegal to burn outdoors during red flag warning days.
Permits for burning brush and wood debris are unchanged under the new law, according to the state department of agriculture.
“This new regulation aims to mitigate the risk of larger campfires getting out of control and causing wildfires,” the department stated in a press release. “By requiring permits for this type of fire, the state hopes to ensure fire safety measures are in place, reducing the potential for fire-related emergencies.”
Permits are available free of charge and can be found after 9 a.m. at maineburnpermit.com.
