Registration for the 2024 Beach to Beacon race in Cape Elizabeth opened this week, and several thousand runners have signed up.
In a news release sent Friday afternoon, organizers say the event has sold out.
Organizers opened registration for the annual 10k charity road race to Cape Elizabeth residents first on Thursday and on Friday, 6,000 slots were made available to general entry.
The race is scheduled for Saturday, August 3rd.
The annual race, which goes from Route 77 in Cape Elizabeth just outside Crescent Beach State Park to Portland Head Light lighthouse at Fort Williams, is a perennial favorite. Spokesperson Angie Helton said as of Friday morning, more than 5,000 runners had already signed up.
According to the race’s website, the race typically brings about 6,500 runners and more than 800 volunteers. Proceeds from registration fees and related fundraising efforts associated with the race go to a different charity organization every year.
In February, race organizers announced that Preble Street Teen Services will be the beneficiary of this year’s race. The center caters to homeless teenagers in Portland.
While organizers do not yet know exactly how much money the center will receive, race sponsor TD Bank will donate $30,000 to the center, with additional awards to be determined after this year’s fundraising is over.
