Two Massachusetts men are facing drug charges after allegedly leading police on a chase in South Portland on Saturday.
Police say a vehicle passed a cruiser at high speed on Westbrook Street at about 1:30 a.m.
“The officer turned to follow the vehicle, and attempted to conduct a traffic stop for the speeding violation,” police stated in a news release. “When the officer activated his emergency equipment (blue lights and siren), the vehicle did not stop and continued driving through the Brickhill neighborhood. The vehicle ultimately turned on to Osprey Circle, still being followed by the police cruiser, and did not stop until reaching the dead end of the circle.
“At this point, the suspect vehicle went into reverse, and started backing towards the police cruiser in an apparent attempt to evade and go around. During this action, the suspect vehicle struck the front bumper of the police vehicle, rendering the suspect vehicle disabled. The driver and passenger of the vehicle were then ordered from the vehicle at gunpoint.”
Police say they confiscated drugs, drug equipment, cash, a knife and cell phones from the vehicle.
No one was hurt and two people were arrested, according to police.
The alleged driver, Hamza A. Mahamud, 21, of Roxbury, Massachusetts, was charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, aggravated criminal mischief, operating without a license; failure to stop; driving to endanger, police said.
Gerald A. Daughtry, 33, of Roslindale, Massachusetts, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, according to police.
Both men were also charged with unlawful trafficking in cocaine; unlawful trafficking in marijuana; unlawful possession of methamphetamine; aggravated trafficking in heroin/fentanyl powder; unlawful possession of cocaine base.
Mahamud and Daughtry were transported to the Cumberland County Jail and are being held on $30,000 cash bail each, according to police.
